Welcome back to another Mod Author Spotlight! Grab a warm mug of tea (assuming it's not too hot where you are - if you hadn’t heard, we've been sweltering in England lately, and admitting I haven't touched tea in a month feels genuinely sacrilegious!) and settle in, because today we’re stepping away from the daily routine of farm chores and venturing deep into the timberland with the extraordinarily talented [url=

[url=
https://www.nexusmods.com/games/stardewvalley]Stardew Valley’s modding scene has long been celebrated for its ability to seamlessly expand on ConcernedApe's original vision, but every so often, a release comes along that redefines how we interact with the Valley altogether. Enter [url=

https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/49526]Campgrounds - an ambitious expansion that introduces the Cindersap Forest Park, a full suite of cozy camping mechanics, custom campfire meals, and expanded park visitor systems.
Powering this wilderness journey is PeacefulEnd’s accompanying release, [url=

https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/49525]Parchment - a surprisingly versatile framework that enables modders to create fully custom, readable in-game books complete with page-turn animations in a beautiful new custom UI.
Whether you're looking to pitch a tent under the star-lit sky, explore cozy new corners of the forest, or build your own custom literature and campsites using the new tools, PeacefulEnd has handed the community a brand new playground. We sat down with them to chat all about it!

To start us off - you honestly need no introduction! You’re a non-stop helping hand in the community, the mastermind behind some huge mods, and you even spearheaded Team Fashion Sense in our recent [url=
https://www.nexusmods.com/stardew-modfest]Modfest event. But for those who haven't had the pleasure yet, we’d love to hear a bit about your journey. What first got you into modding, why Stardew Valley, and how did the idea for Campgrounds first start brewing?
Stardew Valley actually got me into modding! I picked it back up around 2021, after first playing it at release while in college (perhaps a bit too much, the “one more night” effect was very strong). I recall wanting a way to “order” products via Joja but couldn’t find anything like it. I was pointed towards the very welcoming modding community, which got me started on my first ever mod: [url=
https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/7486]Joja Online.
Campgrounds started as an idea earlier this year while out camping with family (what are the odds?). It has slowly been refined into what you see now, thanks to the feedback and suggestions from the community.
The idea for Parchment came about much more recently, as I wanted a way to build an in-game guide to Campgrounds’ many mechanics. Rather than keep it to one mod, I broke Parchment out into its own framework for others to use!

We’ve all experienced that panicked 1:50 AM sprint across the map just to avoid passing out on our front porch! Stardew’s rhythm is so heavily tied to that daily farm grind and racing the clock home. What made you realise the Valley was missing a chance to just slow down and sleep under the stars? And how did you tackle balancing a full camping lifestyle so it feels like a cozy, enticing alternative without throwing off that vanilla loop?
You’re definitely right that Stardew Valley gets you into the rhythm of maximizing your time spent before the clock hits that dreaded 2 AM! I wanted to give the player the opportunity to take a break from that constant cycle and enjoy the great outdoors (well, the virtual kind anyway!).
The big incentive for camping is the various long-lasting buffs you get the day after, so you can return to the farming grind faster and more energetic than ever. The neat part is that what you cook at the campfire determines your buff(s), so you can plan accordingly to make the most of your next day.
To avoid being too disruptive of the standard gameplay loop, I made the starting campsites an hour or less to travel to. So if the player wanted to, they could finish up their watering runs and head straight to the campsite with some time to spare!
One thing that stands out right away to me is how thoughtfully Campgrounds builds into your playthrough. Instead of dumping everything on you while you're still trying to clear weeds off your farm, it holds off until after Spring 14 to introduce itself. What made you decide to build that extra bit of anticipation and integrate the mod so naturally into the early game?
I chose Spring 14 as that is usually when the player has the bulk of the gameplay loop down (farming, socializing, mine runs), so it seemed like a good time to introduce new mechanisms. Campgrounds has numerous benefits for starting players (such as long-lasting buffs from cooking meals and friendship boosts with invited guests), so I wanted to balance between not overwhelming the player and introducing it as soon as possible.
If the player wants to start Campgrounds earlier than that, there is always a config option for it!

Anyone who’s tried touching Stardew UI knows how finicky it gets, so seeing Parchment run this smoothly is awesome (that page turn animation alone, wow). What were the biggest headaches you ran into while creating it? And how did you pull off letting people customise through JSON without needing C#?
By far the biggest headache was breaking down how to represent each component (titles, paragraphs, images, panels, etc.) as JSON and in a way that would still be readable without being overwhelming to mod authors.
Luckily I have been able to build Parchment with my previous experiences of making framework mods. This helped me identify pain points early and format the input in a way that makes sense (each book takes a list of pages, each page takes a list of elements, each element is clearly identifiable).
I would also like to take a moment to thank Gowl and Pixel Vault on itch.io for their pixel art. I don’t think I could have made the book look as nice as it does without working with their sprites as a base.

One of the coolest parts about both Campgrounds and Parchment is that they’re open frameworks. Anyone can jump in and add custom campsites, new park visitors, tents, campfire meals, or their own readable books without needing to know loads about coding. Now that all the documentation is out, what are you most looking forward to seeing the community come up with?
I am really interested in seeing what books mod authors put together, whether for their existing mods or for new mods. There is definitely a major benefit with having in-game guides for even the vanilla mechanics. But even just making a book for immersive reasons would be cool too!
I am also excited to see what new campsites people make. I think the possibilities are truly endless, since they are treated as normal locations (just only reachable via camping). This means campsites could have some fun resources only available there or in larger quantities.

Now for a cozy question! Between cooking over a crackling campfire, setting up camp under the stars, or flipping through the Camping Guide, do you have a personal favourite campsite spot or campfire recipe in the mod?
The first campsite, Cindersap Forest Campgrounds, is definitely my favorite! It was the first one I put together, even before I started building out Campgrounds in earnest. I wanted to make it feel like you were out camping in the Secret Woods (minus the slimes!) and I think it works pretty well!
I am also partial to campfire coffee, despite being a tea person! There is just something about brewing it over a fire that makes it special, you know?

You’ve really covered a bit of everything with all the different mods you’ve made! Now that Campgrounds and Parchment are out in the wild, does it feel like your big Stardew wishlist is mostly checked off, or do you still have a list of vanilla mechanics you're itching to rework?
I am very happy with how those two mods turned out! I don’t currently have any additional mods in mind, so I will be focusing on improving them with the feedback I get.
That said, I am sure more ideas will spring to mind in the future. I had thought [url=
https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/9969]Fashion Sense would be my last Stardew Valley mod, but I've made around 20 more since then!
